Elizabeth Taylor Auction Breaks World Record
Christie’s reports that the recent auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s extensive jewelry collection has set a new world record: fetching $118 million (£74 million) in a single night. Collectors from around the world called in their bids, which became so heated that many of the jewels went for ten times their appraised value. Most of the jewels were used by Taylor throughout her lifetime to accessorize her also-extensive collection of designer dresses.
The diamond and sapphire ring Michael Jackson gave to Taylor was sold for $600,000 and the 33.29-carat stone given to the late actress by Richard Burton—known as the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond—sold for $8.8 million. Her emerald and diamond necklace, crafted by Bulgari, brought in $6.1 million, and a Van Cleef Arpels diamond ring went for $2.3 million.
But by far the highlight of the auction was Taylor’s La Peregrina necklace, one of the world’s most famous pieces of designer jewelry. The 50.6 carat piece has a diamond and ruby rope and a pearl pendant from the 1500s. From 1582 until 1808, the pearl was owned by the Spanish monarchy. Richard Burton bought the pearl in 1969 as a Valentine Day’s gift for Taylor, who later commissioned Cartier to create a diamond and ruby necklace for the tear-drop shaped pearl.
La Peregrina was expected to sell for around $3 million. Instead, it sold for a stunning $11.8 million. After the bidding on the La Peregrina was completed, the audience at Christie broke into spontaneous applause.
Prior to the auction, experts expected the jewelry collection would take in around $30 million. Instead, the old record of $115.9 million (£72.4 million) was handily broken, meaning that Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry is now the most valuable private collection ever sold at auction.
Christie’s America chairman and president Marc Porter says more than its monetary value, the aesthetic quality of Taylor’s gems was unparalleled. “This is without a doubt the greatest private collection of jewelry ever assembled in one place.”
The auction was scheduled over a number of days, and included dozens of her designer dresses and accessories such as handbags. Part of the money earned from the auction will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
