Trend Report: White Dresses

The saying might be “don’t wear white after Labour day”, but that rule has been flouted with hordes of white dresses making their way onto the catwalk this season. From minimal off-duty day dresses to gorgeous evening pieces in a mix of cool white, cream and ivory shades, textured fabrics and lengths, this trend has something to suit everyone.

Who’s Wearing Them?
It’s awards season, and neutrals have already made a splash on the red carpets, with many celebs opting for it – most notably, Angelina Jolie’s asymmetrical satin gown with a stylish pop of red at the collar by Atelier Versace at the Golden Globes, and Lea Michele’s fringed and beaded Marchesa number at the People’s Choice awards. With the Oscars coming up later this month, we’re sure to see many more A-listers channelling their inner bride and opting for pale shades.

Get The Look!

Firstly, a couple of tips on wearing neutrals: If you’ve got a warm skin tone – tanned or olive – white will enhance your complexion and make you look fabulous, but those of us with paler skin will look washed out and should stick to off-whites, creams and ivory shades.

  1. To inject a ladylike aesthetic into your professional wardrobe, opt for something simple and sophisticated, like this white country dress from Max Mara. Compliment the waist belt with low-heeled black pumps for a sophisticated city look, and smarten it up a bit with a black tuxedo jacket for meetings.
  2. For a dazzling evening look, indulge in this stunning long Savannah dress from Vivienne Westwood Gold Label. Team the gorgeous drapery with simple, colour-pop accessories; teal and mustard are especially chic.
  3. Combine two of the season’s hottest trends and be the essence of ethereal allure in this white engineered lace dress by Alexander McQueen. Keep the look simple with a black clutch and beige, suede shoes so that the dress does all the talking.
